Cut from the same cloth

Bartholomew Fair began as a Cloth Fair for merchants trading in wool and fabrics – so it is particularly fitting that City resident and designer Yvonne Courtney is bringing a pop-up shop back to the area. Here’s is Yvonne’s news.

Reinvented Clothing Pop-Up at Cloth Fair

News release

City-based clothing label GOFF COURTNEY – shortlisted in the Barbour/Vogue Design Competition 2022 – is launching its collection of one-off layering pieces with an impromptu pop-up showspace-shop as part of London’s Cloth Fair ‘cluster’ running alongside this year’s reinstated Bartholomew Fair.

GOFF COURTNEY’s distils tailored garments into versatile, easy-to-wear throw- ons. Teasing tradition to become contemporary, fresh and desirable. “Modern classics, with a subversive element,” affirms founder Yvonne Goff Courtney.

GOFF COURTNEY’s concept of reinventing clothing into ‘popovers’ – aka scarves, gilets, bibs and aprons – to layer over people’s existing wardrobe staples has been percolating for a number of years, only to become more pertinent as our climate becomes more changeable, along with people’s lifestyles – and waistlines (!)

Taking a reductionist aesthetic, the resulting statement pieces are predominantly size, age and gender inclusive, designed to embellish people’s existing wardrobes. We all have enough clothes – these clothing-as-accessories items are to zhuzh everyday staples, empowering the outfit – and the wearer – to make their mark.

Blurring the boundaries of formal/casual, town/country and work/play… GOFF COURTNEY pieces enable people to revisit tailoring, shirting, or bygone items such as ties and cravats – with more contemporary iterations which facilitate fun and function; swanky modes in essence.

NOTE TO EDITORS:

  • “Cloth Fair” is a cluster of happenings complementing Bartholomew Fair 2023: 30 August – 16 September. The Smithfield thoroughfare was the original location of BF – established in 1133 as a materials trading event & fun fair – running until 1855 (when it was banned for disorder and debauchery). www.clothfair.city | www.goffcourtney.com
  • After 20+ years of promoting a gamut of creative talent (including Pierre Cardin, Ross Lovegrove, Ron Arad and Allen Jones), former design/publishing PR, magazine editor and gallerist, Yvonne Goff Courtney has bitten the design bullet herself, going full circle to her original passion – reconstructing clothing into new pieces. Based in the City near Leadenhall Market, she is following in her grandfather’s footsteps who ran the UK’s second largest outerwear supplier up the road, near St Paul’s.
